Panorama Route

The Panorama Route is a scenic route along Mpumalanga Escarpment with Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world, central to it. The canyon is 31 kilometres long and is the only green canyon in the world.

The Panorama Route is one of the country’s most scenic drives and explores the Mpumalanga highlands, the north-eastern section of the Great Escarpment of the Drakensberg. In these rugged mountains the plateau comes to an abrupt and dramatic halt. Falling steeply away into the Lowveld accompanied by incredible views out over the savannah of the South African Lowveld. On a clear day there are distant views of the Lebombo mountains which forms the border with between South Africa and Mozambique.

The steep fall is the reason for a large number of waterfalls such as Horse Shoe, Lone Creek, Berlin, Lisbon, MacMac, Motitsi, but to name a few. Pinnacle Rock is a magnificent geological structure and worth the view.

Bourke’s Luck potholes are found at the confluence of the Treur and Blyde River (River of Joy,River of Sorrow), and was named after a 19th century gold digging prospector Tom Bourke. These incredibly beautiful potholes were formed as a result of the swirling waters of the 2 rivers.

The Graskop Gorge lift takes one 51 meters down into the Gorge with spectacular views of the falls and surrounding forest. At the bottom of the Gorge there is a 600m wooden boardwalk through the dense forest. For the brave there is the big swing, much different to a Bungee jump as you are strapped in upright into a full harness, to enjoy the view whilst freefalling the 70 meters below at 140km/h in 3 seconds.

Pilgrims Rest is a nostalgic place, restored to its heydays look and feel when it was a thriving, short lived, booming gold mining town. One of its claims to fame is the fact that it had electrical streetlights before the city of London.

To describe the natural attractions with the written word is difficult, but people recount being able to ‘touch the clouds’ whilst others have called the route the ‘ one of the most beautiful places in the world’.

Kruger Gateway Safaris now proudly offers intimate small group tours (3 adults or 2 adults and 2 kids) of the Panorama in a luxury SUV.
